The Great Discovery

,

Wrote a monologue for middle grade… its the opening from a story I’m working on, about a child who finds a mysterious key in their new homes attic.

(The child is standing in his bedroom, holding a peculiar-looking object—a dusty, old key.)

Child: (Excited, looking at the key)
Okay, this… this is going to sound crazy. But today, while cleaning out the attic—which, by the way, I didn’t even know we had until Mom made me go up there—I found… this! (Holds up the key dramatically)

Now, it might just look like some old, rusty key, but I’m telling you, this thing… it’s magical. I mean, look at it! Who makes keys like this anymore? It’s all twisty, and it even has a little dragon carved into the handle. A dragon!

So, naturally, I started imagining all the things it could open… like, maybe there’s a secret door in the house that I’ve never noticed before. Or maybe a hidden treasure chest! Or… or… a portal to another world!

(Pauses, looks around the room)
Okay, so… maybe I’ve been reading too many fantasy books lately. But can you blame me? I mean, wouldn’t you be excited if you found a mysterious key just lying around in your attic?

(Leans in closer to the camera, whispering conspiratorially)
I’ve decided—I’m going to find out what this key opens. I’ll search every door, every lock, every secret corner. Maybe it’s nothing, but… what if it’s something? What if it’s… everything?

(Smiles, looks at the key, then back at the audience)
So, yeah, I guess that’s my big plan for the weekend. Finding out where this key fits. Because life’s too short not to go on an adventure, right?

(Pause, then with a big grin)
And who knows? Maybe I’ll find a dragon! Or at least… a really cool story.
